Terms of Use

Please read these terms before using our service

Last updated: 8 August 2026

By accessing and using Used Car Checker (usedcarchecker.co.uk), you agree to be bound by these terms of use. If you do not agree with any part of these terms, please do not use our website.

Important — please read. This website is an information tool, not a guarantee. The vehicle data shown comes from third-party government sources and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. Nothing on this site is professional, legal or mechanical advice, and it must not be relied on as the sole basis for buying, selling or driving a vehicle. You use it at your own risk. Always inspect a vehicle in person and obtain independent professional checks before you commit to a purchase.

0. Who Operates This Website

Used Car Checker (usedcarchecker.co.uk) is operated by Mark Bolton, an independent sole operator based in the United Kingdom. Mark built the site and its scoring model personally, and it is not run by, affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to the DVSA, the DVLA, any government department, any vehicle manufacturer, dealership, insurer or finance provider.

All correspondence, including complaints, corrections and legal notices, should be sent to hello@usedcarchecker.co.uk. In these terms, "we", "us", "our" and "Used Car Checker" all refer to Mark Bolton as operator of this website.

1. Service Description

Used Car Checker provides a free vehicle information service that retrieves MOT history, vehicle details and related data from official UK government sources (DVSA and DVLA). Our service includes MOT history checks, vehicle comparisons, reliability scoring, timing chain/cambelt information and recall alerts.

2. Free Service

Our service is provided free of charge. We reserve the right to modify, suspend or discontinue any part of the service at any time without notice. We are not liable for any loss or inconvenience caused by any modification, suspension or discontinuation of the service.

3. Data Accuracy and No Warranty

The vehicle data displayed on our website comes from the DVSA and DVLA. While we make every effort to present this data accurately, we cannot guarantee its completeness or accuracy. The data is provided "as is" from government sources.

The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we specifically disclaim any warranty that the information on this site is accurate, complete, current, reliable, error-free or fit for any particular purpose.

We do not originate the vehicle data. It is retrieved from third-party government systems that we do not control, and we have no ability to verify it independently. Errors can arise at source, in transmission, in caching, or through a vehicle's record being incomplete. In particular, and without limiting the above, we make no representation that:

  • the MOT history shown is complete or matches the official record at any given moment;
  • recorded mileage figures are genuine or have not been tampered with;
  • the absence of a defect, advisory, recall or warning means none exists;
  • a reliability score, verdict, cambelt or timing chain indication, or recall alert is correct for any specific vehicle;
  • a vehicle is roadworthy, safe, legally taxed, insured, free of finance, not stolen and not previously written off.

A high score, a clean history or the absence of a warning on this site is not evidence that a vehicle is sound. Free MOT data cannot show outstanding finance, stolen markers, insurance write-off history, or the quality of any repair. Where the official record and our presentation of it differ, the official record prevails — verify it directly at GOV.UK.

Our reliability scores, vehicle verdicts, timing chain/cambelt information and recall alerts are automated interpretations produced by our own algorithm. They reflect our opinion based on limited data, are not statements of fact about any vehicle, and their known limitations are published in full on our methodology page.

Our reliability scores, vehicle verdicts, timing chain/cambelt information and recall alerts are provided for informational purposes only. They should not be used as the sole basis for a vehicle purchase decision. We recommend that you always:

  • Have any used vehicle independently inspected before purchase
  • Check the vehicle's history with an official HPI or similar check
  • Verify the MOT status on the official GOV.UK MOT checker
  • Check for recalls on the GOV.UK recall checker
  • Test drive the vehicle and check all documentation

4. Acceptable Use

You agree to use our service only for lawful purposes. You must not:

  • Use automated tools, bots or scrapers to access our service at excessive rates
  • Attempt to interfere with or disrupt the service
  • Use the service to harass, stalk or track individuals
  • Reproduce, redistribute or commercially exploit the data without permission
  • Attempt to reverse-engineer the service or our scoring algorithms

We implement rate limiting to ensure fair access for all users. Excessive or abusive usage may result in temporary or permanent access restrictions.

5. Intellectual Property

The design, layout, scoring algorithms, content and functionality of Used Car Checker are our intellectual property. The underlying vehicle data belongs to the DVSA and DVLA and is used under their respective terms. You may not copy, reproduce or redistribute our content without written permission.

6. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Mark Bolton, as operator of Used Car Checker, shall not be liable to you or to any third party for any loss or damage, whether direct, indirect, incidental, special, punitive or consequential, and whether arising in contract, tort (including negligence), misrepresentation, breach of statutory duty or otherwise, arising out of or in connection with:

  • your use of, or inability to use, this website or the service;
  • any decision you make, or refrain from making, in reliance on information shown here — including any decision to buy, sell, price, insure, repair, scrap or drive a vehicle;
  • any error, omission, inaccuracy, incompleteness or delay in the data, whether originating from the DVSA, the DVLA, any other third party, or from our own processing of it;
  • any reliability score, verdict, defect classification, mileage assessment, cambelt or timing chain indication, or recall alert being inaccurate or misleading for a particular vehicle;
  • any financial loss, loss of profit, loss of opportunity, wasted expenditure, cost of repair, or loss arising from a vehicle proving to be defective, unroadworthy, stolen, written off, clocked or subject to outstanding finance;
  • any temporary or permanent unavailability, interruption or withdrawal of the service.

You are solely responsible for verifying any information before acting on it, and for the decisions you take.

6.1 What we do not exclude

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability for:

  • death or personal injury caused by our negligence;
  • fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation; or
  • any other liability that cannot lawfully be excluded or limited under the law of England and Wales.

If you are a consumer, these terms do not affect your statutory rights, and any provision that would be unfair under consumer protection law applies only to the extent that it is fair and reasonable. If any part of this section is found to be unenforceable, the remainder continues to apply.

7. No Professional Advice

The information provided on this website does not constitute professional automotive, mechanical or legal advice. Our reliability scores and vehicle verdicts are algorithmically generated from publicly available data and should be treated as one of many factors in a vehicle purchase decision. Always seek professional advice where appropriate.

8. Third-Party Links

Our website contains links to external websites including GOV.UK, manufacturer sites and others. We are not responsible for the content, accuracy or availability of these external sites. Inclusion of a link does not imply endorsement.

9. Advertising

Our website may display advertisements from Google or other advertising partners to help fund the free service we provide. Any optional advertising-related storage is subject to your consent choices. We are not responsible for the content of third-party advertisements, and any interaction with them is at your own risk.

10. Modifications

We reserve the right to modify these terms at any time. Changes take effect immediately upon posting on this page. Your continued use of the service after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the modified terms.

11. Governing Law

These terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales. Any disputes arising from these terms or your use of the service shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.

12. Contact

If you have any questions about these terms, or wish to report an inaccuracy, please email hello@usedcarchecker.co.uk or visit our contact page. Legal notices should be sent to the same address, marked for the attention of Mark Bolton.

We take reports of inaccurate information seriously and will investigate them. Where an error originates in the official DVSA or DVLA record, it must be corrected at source before it will change here.
